How toxic is Mercury?
Mercury is extremely toxic. In fact the WHO has stated that no level of mercury is safe. Even 2 PPB (parts per billion) in water would make it undrinkable. As soon as the body detects mercury in the blood it aims to eliminate it as soon as possible. Your body can get rid of mercury but when the mercury builds up beyond a certain level it stops eliminating it and instead stores it in every tissue type in the body.

So How Can You be Exposed to Mercury?
There are many sources of mercury exposure.

Vaccines
Until 2001 in Australia, Thimerosol (a mercury preservative) was used in all vaccines. It has since been removed in all standard childhood vaccines but is still present in many adult ones. To put this in context, although 2 PPB of Mercury in water makes water undrinkable, our governments considered it acceptable to inject our babies with the equivalent of 50,000 ppb in each vaccine phial. If a doctor drops the vaccine vial on the floor of the surgery, the spillage is treated as toxic waste!

Cosmetics
Some skin whitening products use Mercury as an active ingredient and it is readily absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin.

Fluorescent Bulbs
Mercury is used either as a vapour or as elemental mercury in these bulbs. When the bulbs are broken the mercury is released and pollutes the environment and finds itself into water ways.

Fish
You are likely to be aware of the issue of Mercury in fish. The levels of mercury increase as the fish get larger as they are further up the food chain and are therefore accumulating more Mercury from eating contaminated smaller fish. It is advised to only eat the following fish no more than once a week for a healthy adult and chronically ill people, children and pregnant and nursing mothers should avoid the following fish:

• Shark
• Marlin
• Swordfish
• Large Tuna

Dental Amalgam Fillings
This is the big one! The mercury contained in amalgam fillings is not inert and is released to varying degrees depending on the activity. The amount of mercury released is directly proportional to the temperature, so drinking hot liquids releases significantly more mercury than cold drinks. When you chew, drink, grind your teeth, mercury is released and absorbed directly through the delicate lining of the mouth and stomach. Some studies have shown mercury to build up in the brain, pituitary and adrenal glands. Other studies have found it builds up in the kidneys, liver and brain of human foetuses and can also be passed to infants via breastmilk.

How do you determine Mercury Toxicity?

1) Homeopathic medicines are nothing more than sugar pill that contain no measurable substance.

Certain homeopathic medicines have no measurable substance. However, many remedies do have measurable substances. In medicine that is 24X or 12C has no measurable substance. However, some medicine potency such as 6X, 6C, 12X will have a measurable substance.

2) Homeopathy has never been successful in large scale well designed trials. Trials have only worked when homeopaths were doing the trials or poorly designed trials with quite a bit of author’s bias.

Trials in Homeopathy is a very mixed bag. Sometimes people are looking at the wrong information source. Many skeptics will take successful trials and point out that when looking at larger trials in the study, homeopathy does not seem to work. Although, the conclusions of the authors were that homeopathy seems to works better than a placebo.

However, some trials that were successful were fairly large. Oscillococcinum trials were quite large and well designed but still yielded a positive result in shortening the flu duration. Similar studies with Osccillococcinum were replicated as well. The idea that homeopathic remedies have never been successful in a large scale well designed trial is not true.

3) Homeopathy should not be used to treat life threatening diseases.

Homeopathy can treat life threatening diseases with the help of a well trained homeopathic physician. Also, the general medical doctor and other specialists involved in treating the disease should be included on the treatment plan. Medical doctors should always be seen if you have a life threatening illness. Homeopathy can not cure all life threatening diseases.

Many people with life threatening diseases have fared well with Homeopathy. Homeopathy malaria trials show that in trials that homeopathic medicine worked as well as conventional medicine in treating people with malaria.

4) Homeopathy and modern medicine can not work together

Homeopathy can be quite complementary to modern medicine.Many patients under going chemotherapy have seen their side effects reduced when taking homeopathic remedies. Trials with reduction of cancer treatments provided encouraging results.

5) Homeopathy, Herbal, and Ayurvedic medicine are similar.

Homeopathy, Herbal and Ayurvedic are forms of alternative medicine but these forms of medicine are not similar in any other way. Homeopathy use diluted substances to treat patients. Every medicine has been diluted in water or alcohol.

Herbal medicine is medicine based on the use of plants. Ayurvedic is an ancient system of medicine started in India that operates with the theory that all materials of vegetable, animal, and mineral origin have some medicinal value.

Ayurvedic use these materials to treat patients. Ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines are used quite a bit in India so that creates some confusion in people thinking they are the same thing.

6) Homeopathy is slow to work

Acute conditions such as flu, colds, motion sickness and pain relief can be treated quickly using homeopathic medicines. Chronic conditions are slow to work because they are complicated to treat. Chronic conditions would be acne, eczema, irritable bowel syndrome and other conditions will take longer to treat.

7) Homeopathy is only for human use.

8) You can get a book on Homeopathy and treat yourself.

A book can not tell you which homeopathic remedies to take and how much to take when your condition starts to improve or worsen.

9) Homeopathic remedies are not widely available.

This may have been true a few years ago. However, many remedies can be found pretty much all over the US. Walmart, CVS Pharmacy, Target and larger retailers carry combination homeopathic remedies for acute conditions such as cold and flu and insomnia.

Single remedies which homeopaths claim to work the best are not as readily available. These remedies can be found in health food stores, natural pharmacies or on the Internet. They are more specialized and generally most people taking single remedies have some homeopathic knowledge or a doctor has prescribed that medicine.

10) All homeopathic remedies work the same on all people.

Homeopathy works different on different people. Classical homeopathy treats different individuals with different remedies according to their personality type. One person may use one remedy to treat a illness, while another person would use a different remedy to treat the same illness.

Homeopathy assumes everyone is different so using the same remedy to treat everyone will not work according to Classical Homeopathy principals. Modern medicine generally gives everyone the same medicine for general conditions.

Do homeopathic medicines have steroids?

All Homoeopathic medicines are prepared by using scientific predefined methods of extracting the medicinal properties from source substances. There is no scope or need to adulterate the derived medicines with any other substances, as this would completely obliterate the curative properties of the same.

The prescription of homoeopathic medicines is based on the similarity of the symptoms of the patient with those produced by the drug (in its purest form) when proved (clinical trials) in healthy individuals. Does homeopathy believe in disease diagnosis and pathological investigations?

Yes it is very essential to diagnose a disease as for the selection of the remedy we require to know the characteristics symptoms and not the disease symptoms. For e.g. If a person is having an attack of asthma he will be having wheezing and congestion of the chest and he gets relief only if he throws his head backwards. The symptom throwing head backward relieves is very peculiar which will help us in getting the right remedy. A good knowledge of disease is important. The pathological investigations are also important to know the prognosis and disease diagnosis.

Are there any food restrictions during the treatment?

Yes one has to avoid coffee, raw onion and raw garlic. One should also avoid eating mint, camphor and menthol as these can hinder the action of the homeopathic medicine or antidote the effect of the medicine.

Does one have to stop other medicines which the patient has been taking?

No. The patient should not stop the medicines which he has been taking. It should be tapered after the patient is improving this should be done in consultation with the other treating physician.

In some cases the other medicine cannot be discontinued in such instances both the medicines have to be continued for the benefit of the patient. The treatment should be planned and properly implemented.

Do homeopathic medicines bring about aggravation initially?

In some cases there is an initial aggravation of the symptoms but it is a good sign
that the medicine is right and has started acting. But this happens in a few cases not all patients will have an aggravation.

Is Homeopathy a proved science?

It definitely is. Homeopathy is a science based on sound logic and vast experimental data. Homeopathy is the only medicinal science where data has been collected by proving on human beings. The principles of Homeopathy have been derived and authenticated by vast clinical experiments and data. The homoeopathic medicines are prepared in a standardized manner. Are Homoeopaths qualified doctors?

Is it true that Homoeopathic medicines are only placebos (sugar pills)?

Homoeopathic medicines are also available in liquid form or tinctures, which can be ingested directly or by diluting them in water.

Does the Homoeopath give the same white pills for all illnesses/patients?

Certainly not. Although it appears that same white pills are given for all illnesses or patients it is not so, as there are more than 3500 remedies to prescribe from and new medicines are added to the list regularly, after their proving and clinical trials. All homoeopathic medicines are available as liquids with an alcohol base. In order to dispense a medicine to a patient, the indicated remedy in the liquid form is poured on the white sugar pills, which merely act as vehicles to transfer the medicinal property. Hence it appears that the same white pills are administered to all.

Is homeopathic treatment effective for children, adults, woman and elderly?

Homeopathy has no bar for age and sex; it is equally effective for every human being in every stage of their life from birth till death.

Does Homeopathy work in acute cases?

Yes. Homeopathy has wonderful remedies that give prompt relief in acute cases like fever, cough, cold, diarrhea, headaches etc. when the person opts for Homeopathy at the onset of the ailment.

Does Homeopathy believe in Surgery?

Yes, it does. Surgery is a separate branch of science. It has to be resorted to in conditions that are beyond the domain of medicine. But one can avoid surgery as Homeopathy can effectively treat many so called surgical conditions like, tonsillitis, piles, warts, kidney stones etc.

Should one take homoeopathic medicines only from a qualified doctor?

Yes he should. There have been instances of miracle cures by lay people practicing Homeopathy, but it is always advisable to go to a homoeopathic physician, as he is qualified to judge the severity and depth of your illness and thereby prevent undue complications later on, which could be overlooked by a hobby practitioner due to his ignorance of medical knowledge. Only a qualified physician can guide you towards a complete (mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and pathological) recovery.
